Dancer in Residence

February 18 – April 15 2019
Vienna Austria

Nathan & Gaby take part in a very special dancer in residency, designed by IG HOP. During their residency, they immerse themselves in the vibrant and active lindy hop community of Vienna. Their class materials will span follower skills, rhythm, musicality, partnering technique, and the philosophy and definition of lindy hop.

From IG Hop:IG HOP puts on Lindy Hop classesworkshops and different kinds of events related to swing dance culture  in Vienna and elsewhere. Also, we organise various Swing dance-events and concerts. Our regular events are Monday Mess Around (MoMA) at Fania Live and The Fruity Hop at Volksgarten Pavillion. And at the moment we do also a weekly Saturday event (Tanzerei in der Markthalle) in cooperation with the Markterei.

“We” is a group of people (an Interest Group, aka IG) who met on the dance floor in Vienna. Sharing a passion for Lindy HopVernacular Jazz DanceCharlestonSwing and Jazz, we joined forces to generate an up-to-date frame for the Viennese Swing scene to grow and develop.

For us, learning how to dance Lindy Hop means finding a possibility to express rhythm, melody and the mood of swing in creative ways together with a partner through a dance. In partner-dancing, who leads and who follows is up to individual taste. In our classes, we keep the maximum of participants per group small. This allows us to give personal feedback and individual support. Further more we are counteracting gender-stereotypes in the dance with our LSF—20%program and our role switch- and open role classes . With our Dancers In Residence Programm (DIR#) we are supporting international dance talents in their artistic development and exchange with our local dance scene. From The Top is our podcast that is devoted to the international discourse on swing dance culture.Dancing btw. happens on the dance floor, so it’s our aim to see students out in the wild as soon as possible.
